CHECK OUT OUR TEACHER, JACKIE VIERECK’S YOGA POSE BELOW!
“Here’s a picture of one of my favorite yoga moments—My friend and I decided to a little yoga photo shoot on a chilly day. It was not my best yoga day as far as being able to get into and hold those “fun” yoga poses I had pictured myself doing in my mind. Vrksasana (tree pose) is a pose I think I’m more often shaky in than not, but on this day, I found pure stillness and peace amongst the trees, so it’s a great yoga memory for me!
Below are Jackie’s instructions for Vrksasana-Tree pose:
Begin in Tadasana, Mountain Pose, with both feet grounded firmly and evenly. Have a slight tuck to your tailbone, pull your belly in, relax your shoulders and find your drishti or focal point. Allow yourself to settle into your pranayama of choice. This will remain your foundation throughout Vrksasana, Tree Pose.
Shift your weight into your right leg allowing your left foot to raise off of the ground; guide your left foot towards a spot on the inside of the right leg starting in a “kickstand” (with just the left heal contacting the right ankle area and left toes touching the ground) and possibly working your left foot upward to a comfortable spot, avoiding the inside of the right knee. Your left knee will be bent and out to the left allowing your hip flexor to stretch and open up.
Keep hips even (try to avoid allowing the standing leg hip to sink and the lifted leg hip to raise) and remember your Tadasana foundation as you settle into the pose. Allow your arms to find a comfortable position (for example, out to the sides or hands pressing together at heart’s center in Anjali Mudra) as you keep your breath steady and keep your focus on your drishti.
Hold for 3-5 breaths before releasing on an exhale, returning to Tadasana and switching sides when you’re ready.
**Most importantly remember to practice the yama Aparigraha, or non-attachment, in this and every yoga pose you practice. After all, it’s called a yoga practice for a reason- not a yoga perfect!! Letting go of the idea that the pose has to be “perfect” will bring you a sense of freedom and allow your practice to continue to grow beautifully. 🙂
